The Winter Lake Plot Summary and Synopsis

The murky thriller set in rainy rural Ireland begins with emotionally unstable Tom (Anson Boon) moving into a new house with his mother, Elaine (Charlie Murphy) after his great grandfather died.

Elaine flirts with Ward and invites him for a whisky.

Later he discovers a sack in a shallow turlach (lake) containing the bones of a human baby. He keeps the bones, which are later discovered by Holly (Emma Mackey) a teenage daughter of former Roose Bolton of Game of Thrones (Michael McElhatton), a farmer Ward.

Elaine flirts with Ward and invites him for a whisky.

Tom and Holly start a weird friendship. Their first date kicks off when Holly cuts an earthworm in halves.

Ward goes to Elaine’s house searching for Holly. She offers him a drink and explains the reason she ended up here – Tom cut her boyfriend with a knife he always carries with him.

Meanwhile, Holly robs an old lady in the casino of few Euro coins with Tom’s help and plays the slot machine. They win and Holly buys two cups of tea at a nearby diner. She tells him she knows about him finding baby remnants.

Tom gets angry and runs out, but is stopped by Holly’s boyfriend Col along with his gang in a car. They offer her and Tom a ride.

Col insults Tom and he strikes Col with a knife.

Holly tells Tom she killed a baby.

Holly gets home and Ward is quite angry about her going out with lads. A short conversation shows he is aware of the dead baby as well. Holly blatantly says Tom found the remains and Ward promises to deal with it.

Holly tells Tom she killed a baby so that to stop it from crying. She also reveals the baby’s father is Ward, who’s been getting into her room since she was 11.

Holly asks Tom to kill her father and returns him the knife, but he silently refuses and runs away.

Col with a gang sees Tom at the diner, chases, and beats him. Elaine saves Tom and gets him into a van with Ward in the driver’s seat.

Ward drives them home and puts Elaine’s sleeping pills into her drink, but she wakes up and asks him to leave.

Tom brings the baby to Holly and stays at her home. When Ward comes back Tom tries to assault him. Holly drives away with a baby and Col.

Elaine finds a letter and baby’s remnants in Tom’s room. It is revealed he never gave it to Holly. Elaine runs to Ward’s house, but he’s already drove away with Tom. Elaine calls the police.

Holly provokes an accident with her father’s van. Both he and Tom and uninjured, and Tom runs away. Ward catches him and tries to drown him in the lake.

Elaine hits Ward with a stone and apparently kills him on the spot.

The Winter Lake Ending

Elaine walks into the fields and approaches Tom who waits by the lake. He takes her by hand.

The Ending Explained

The protagonist discovered a dark mystery, but managed to survive, and, apparently, wasn’t charged with attempted first degree murder. The fate of Holly remains unclear. She might come back as soon as she knows of her father’s death.
