Justice Society: World War II Plot Summary and Synopsis

In the early 1940s; with the Nazis invading most of Europe, and Adolf Hitler after magical artifacts, Franklin D. Roosevelt is asked by Colonel Steve Trevor to finally get Americans involved, by creating a team of superhumans. Consisting of Black Canary, Hawkman, Hourman, Jay Garrick / Flash, Trevor, and led by Wonder Woman; the Justice Society of America is given the go.

In the present day, Barry Allen / Flash and Iris West have a picnic in Metropolis hoping to get away from “work” when disaster strikes: arriving as The Flash, Superman, the Man of Tomorrow fights Brainiac and his army with Flash’s help. When Brainiac fires a Kryptonite bullet, Flash goes so fast, he channels the Speed Force for the first time. Led by the voice of Doctor Fate, he arrives in the past during a battle between the JSA and the Nazis in France.

Despite the confusion over who or what he is, the team realizes Barry is an ally when he defeats a group of Nazis, saves Trevor, and believes he is from the future. When the team goes out to stop a second strike, Barry takes Trevor back to base, where he learns about the JSA, a secret superhero team he never heard of until now.

Meeting “Shakespeare”, the JSA war correspondent that Barry seems to recognize, and after Trevor makes another pass at proposing to Diana, the team meets up for their next mission. They agree despite possible time paradoxes, they need Barry’s help in saving a codebreaker from a Nazi Fortress who can decode a message Trevor stole. Arriving at the Fortress, the team including Trevor and “Shakespeare”, break-in and defeat the Nazis inside, while searching for any survivors from the Nazi torture chambers.

“Shakespeare” rescues one prisoner, who is excited to see him as “he”, said he’ll know what to do when given the package with a red and blue suit inside. A guard attacks “Shakespeare”, only to survive thanks to the bullets bouncing off him. Diana, Barry, and Trevor arrive, and seeing “Shakespeare’s” powers in awe, Barry realizes he is Clark Kent; but when Clark reveals his background different from the Clark he knows, Barry realizes the truth: he is not in the past, but another Earth.

At the same time, the rest of the team finds the codebreaker, and Hawkman realizes he is Doctor Fate. Breaking the code with his powers, Fate directs the team to the Bermuda Triangle, before he disappears.

Arriving at the Triangle by sub, the team is spotted by Nazi warships above. After the depth charges disable the engines, the two Flashes jump-start the sub just as Diana torpedoes out to destroy the ships with the depth charges. Missing others, Diana and the sub are saved by the soldiers of Atlantis, who direct them to the outpost underneath the Triangle.

Met by The Advisor, the team meets Aquaman, who then traps them in a prison. It is revealed that Aquaman is under the control of The Advisor, who trapped the JSA and is influencing the Nazis to work with Atlantis, and then take over the planet once Atlantis destroys the Nazis after.

The two Flashes realize they both are becoming weaker because they are together, so they decide to work together to regain their strength and break through the prison. The team split up, one for New York, where Atlantis/Nazis are targeting, while Barry and Diana try to stop Aquaman and the Advisor from releasing monsters called The Trench, but they are too late.

Atlantis begins their invasion in Manhattan, attacking everybody until the JSA arrives. They have the upper hand until the Trench arrives. The battle is fierce; Hawkman is killed in action, while Hourman is wounded, and a vengeful Black Canary destroys the monsters.

Diana and Barry rejoin the fight and fight Aquaman. Diana is overpowered until Trevor arrives, and Diana destroys Aquaman’s trident, knocking him out but coming to his senses. When he comes to and sees what he has done, he retreats in shame, ending the battle. The Advisor reappears and reveals the second strike coming from the Nazi bombers and kills Trevor before Barry knocks him out.

The team is weak and hope seems lost until Superman arrives; jumping and ripping apart every bomber until the fleet is all and destroyed. The JSA wins the fight, but with a cost as Diana and Trevor say their goodbyes as he passes away.

Barry realizes he must go back to his Earth, and the team says their goodbyes, with Diana handing over her ring Trevor gave her, telling him not to make the same mistake about missed opportunities with his loved ones.

The Ending

Jay and Barry superspeed together and send Barry back home, just as he reaches Kryptonite bullet and destroys Brainiac with it. Barry makes a proposal to Clark: with more enemies emerging, but new heroes doing the same, he suggests they form a team. Barry meets back up with Iris and decides to propose to her, to which she accepts.

Cooncel Rating

Typical comics-like cartoon story that does not affect anything in-universe. Another DC’s attempt to expand its universe is surprisingly better than recent live-action movies.
