The Super Mario Bros. Movie Plot Summary and Synopsis
The film begins with a flashback to Mario’s childhood, where he is raised by his loving parents in New York City. He also meets his younger brother Luigi, who is adopted by the family after being found on their doorstep. Mario’s father, a plumber and inventor, gives him a special wrench that can fix anything. Mario’s mother, a singer and storyteller, tells him stories about the Mushroom Kingdom, a magical land where she claims to be from. She also gives him a pendant with a star-shaped gem, saying that it is a gift from her father, the king.
One day, Mario’s parents are killed in a car accident, leaving him and Luigi orphaned. They are taken in by their uncle Tony, who runs a plumbing business. Mario grows up to be a skilled plumber, while Luigi becomes a computer whiz. They also befriend Toad, a street musician who plays the harmonica.
Meanwhile, in the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach is celebrating her 18th birthday with her loyal subjects. She is unaware that her uncle Bowser, who usurped the throne after killing her father, is plotting to capture her and use her pendant to activate the Star Rod, a powerful wand that can grant any wish. Bowser has also kidnapped and brainwashed Peach’s childhood friend Kamek, a wizard who can control the Star Rod.
Bowser sends his henchmen Spike and Cranky Kong to kidnap Peach, but they accidentally end up in New York through a warp pipe. They chase Peach through the city streets, attracting the attention of Mario and Luigi, who are working on a plumbing job nearby. Mario recognizes Peach from his mother’s stories and decides to help her. He uses his wrench to fight off Spike and Cranky Kong, while Luigi hacks into a traffic light to cause a distraction. They manage to escape with Peach and Toad, who joins them along the way.
Peach explains that she is the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom and that Bowser is after her pendant. She also reveals that she knows Mario’s mother, who was her aunt and the sister of her father. She says that Mario’s mother left the Mushroom Kingdom to marry his father and gave her pendant to Mario as a sign of trust. She also says that Mario and Luigi are her cousins and the rightful heirs to the throne.
Mario is shocked by this revelation and doesn’t believe it at first. He thinks that Peach is crazy and that he is just an ordinary plumber. He also doesn’t want to get involved in any trouble and just wants to return to his normal life. However, he changes his mind when he sees Bowser’s airship flying over New York, dropping bombs and Koopas on the city. He realizes that Bowser is a real threat and that he has to stop him.
Mario and his friends follow Peach’s pendant to an abandoned subway station, where they find a hidden warp pipe that leads to the Mushroom Kingdom. They enter the pipe and arrive in Toad Town, the capital of the kingdom. There they meet Toad General, the leader of the Toad Resistance, who welcomes them and tells them about Bowser’s tyranny. He also introduces them to Donkey Kong, an old friend of Cranky Kong who defected from Bowser’s side after seeing his cruelty.
Toad General explains that Bowser has taken over most of the Mushroom Kingdom and enslaved its inhabitants. He also says that Bowser is planning to use the Star Rod to merge both worlds and create his own empire. He says that only Peach can stop him by using her pendant to counteract the Star Rod’s power.
Mario agrees to help Peach and decides to infiltrate Bowser’s castle with Luigi, Toad, Donkey Kong, and Kamek’s former assistant Lumalee, who joins them along the way. They use various disguises and gadgets to sneak past Bowser’s guards and traps until they reach his throne room.
There they confront Bowser, who reveals that he has already activated the Star Rod and merged both worlds into one chaotic mess. He also reveals that he has captured Uncle Tony and turned him into a Goomba as punishment for helping Mario and Luigi escape from New York. He then orders Kamek to use the Star Rod to destroy Mario and his friends.
However, before Kamek can do so, he is knocked out by Mario’s Dad, who appears out of nowhere and reveals that he is still alive. He explains that he survived the car accident and was taken to the Mushroom Kingdom by Mario’s Mom, who also survived. He says that they have been hiding in the castle and waiting for the right moment to strike. He also says that they have been secretly helping Mario and his friends along the way by sending them clues and items.
Mario is overjoyed to see his parents and hugs them. He also apologizes for doubting Peach and his destiny. He then uses his wrench to free Uncle Tony from Bowser’s spell and joins forces with him to fight Bowser. Luigi, Toad, Donkey Kong, Lumalee, and Kamek, who regains his senses and betrays Bowser, also join the battle.
Peach uses her pendant to weaken the Star Rod’s power and undo the merger of both worlds. She also frees the Mushroom Kingdom from Bowser’s control and restores peace and harmony. She then uses the Star Rod to grant everyone’s wishes, such as giving Toad a voice like a rock star, making Donkey Kong the king of the jungle, and turning Kamek into a good wizard.
Mario and Peach share a kiss and declare their love for each other. Mario also proposes to Peach and asks her to marry him. Peach accepts and says that she wants to live with him in both worlds. Mario agrees and says that he wants to introduce her to his friends in New York.
