People Just Do Nothing: Big in Japan Plot Summary and Synopsis
3 years after the final transmission of Kurupt FM and the crew moving to Essex, MC Grindah works as a postman, DJ Beats works in a bowling alley, and DJ Steves is still based in the Brentford flats.
However, their everyday lives are changed when Chabuddy G announces the news that their song, ‘Heart Monitor Riddem’, has found massive fame in Japan on an obstacle course gameshow.
Furthermore, the company responsible for the gameshow wishes to invite them to Japan for a record deal. With this in mind, the crew get back together and fly out to Japan. Miche, however, later joins in with the crew after not having a ticket.
In Tokyo, the Kurupt FM crew are assigned their manager, Taka, and their translator Miki. The introduction of Taka proves difficult for Chabuddy, who sees Taka trying to replace him as their manager and further proved when he is left out in a club.
With Steves erratic behaviour and Miki acting as a weed dealer for him, the two bond as friends very quickly. In Japan, the company plans Kurupt FM’s debut to the Japanese audience, with a concert featuring them planned within a week of them arriving and a record deal.
However, the exact terms and conditions regarding their deal are unknown, as Chabuddy deleted the email regarding the small print.
The Kurupt FM crew’s first day in action proves perplexing. Instead of expecting a recording studio, the crew are lead to a dance studio to perform a dance commonly featured on the game show, associated with their song, much to their dismay. With a quick talk with Taka, Grindah insists to the crew that the dances are necessary and are needed for their success in Japan.
Later on, the crew go for a photoshoot in their outfits for the concert, and it becomes clear that Taka is eyeing Grindah as more important than the rest of the members.
During a dinner with Miche and Taka, a vengeful Chabuddy breaks in and chastises Grindah for sidelining him over Taka, offering Grindah a choice between him or Taka. Grindah doesn’t budge, and Chabuddy leaves distraught.
The rift between Beats and Grindah comes to fruition when they are expected to appear on the game show with their new name, the ‘Bang Boys’. Shortly before the show, Beats scolds Grindah for not sticking to their garage roots and accuses Grindah of selling out.
This results in a fight between Beats and Grindah, leaving Grindah in tears and the rest of the crew departing from him. Grindah appears alone on the game show, brooding as he watches himself flail on the obstacle courses. Grindah himself starts to find it difficult when he records with a J-Pop artist – the differences in genre make it challenging to rap for him.
Meanwhile, Steves has taken a liking for Miki but struggles to equate his feelings for her. A drunk Chabuddy buys rounds for Japanese salarymen until he looks at the bill, having spent several hundred pounds on drinks. He is promptly kicked out of the hotel for not paying and is left homeless.
The day of the concert arrives, and only Grindah is there. Grindah believes that his crew are back, although his crew members are those with cartoonish heads of the Kurupt FM crew.
The difficulties in not having his former crew around him and his loathing of the experience leads him to lock himself in the bathroom.
However, Chabuddy G arrives at the rescue after tracking a Bang Boys van to the concert, but Grindah has escaped. As the Bang Boys attempt to go on stage, Chabuddy and Miki convince Taka’s managers that he knows the dance routine and promptly escape.
What is left of Kurupt FM crew are sulking in a karaoke bar.
Suddenly, Grindah bursts in and reaffirms his friendship with Beats, saying it is the ‘best thing to happen’ to him. The rest of the gang arrive and do an emotional karaoke to ‘Heart Monitor Riddem’, whilst Taka embarrasses himself at the concert.
