Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train Plot Summary and Synopsis

The movie opens with Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, and Inosuke board a train at the last moment, as they are hiding from the police so that no one discovered they have swords. They meet the Flame Hashira Kyōjurō Rengoku who is very anxious about the train meal. When asked, Tanjiro tells him, that they are to join Kyōjurō on a train. Kyōjurō explains that his mission is to track and hunt for a demon that has killed many demon slayers.

Zenitsu is not happy about the situation. As if to prove his point, two demons appear, and Kyōjurō beheads and destroys both.

Soon, a conductor appears and punches their tickets, which later is revealed as a demon’s trick so that to activate the spell, which puts them all into a deep sleep. Enmu, Lower Rank One of the Twelve Kizuki, communicates with four passengers using his speaking hand. He instructs them to enter the demon slayers’ dreams and destroy their spiritual cores so that they can’t wake up again. In exchange, Enmu offers them a peaceful sleep as they all are suffering from severe insomnia.

During sleep, the group has happy dreams. Tanjiro and Kyōjurō dream about their families, Zenitsu dreams about a date with Nezuko, and Inosuke dreams about leading the group against a train-centipede with fictionalized versions of Tanjiro and Zenitsu who obey Inosuke’s orders.

One of the passengers hired by the demon tries to destroy the spiritual core of Kyōjurō, but he unconsciously grabs her by the throat while still sleeping.

Nezuko gets out of the box, sees Tanjiro sleeping, and tries to wake him up by hitting him with her head. She fails and only hurts herself. Then she unleashes her demon power, which penetrates his dream. He leaves dream versions of his siblings and mother with a hard heart.

Inosuke chases a passenger in his cave-like subconscious, while Zenitsu’s subconscious is completely dark with no sign of anything at all. Zenitsu tells the frightened passenger that no one is allowed there, but Nezuko, before trying to kill him.

Enmu, who stays on the train’s top, wonders what takes passengers so long to destroy the spiritual cores of demon slayers.

Tanjiro realizes that he is dreaming and tries to wake up, succeeding after a vision of his father instructs him to kill himself in the dream. Tanjiro cuts his neck and wakes up.

He asks Nezuko to use her power once again to burn the ropes intruders tied themselves to the group. This awakens the three passengers who attack Tanjiro in fear of Enmu. He knocks them out. The fourth passenger, who was connected to Tanjiro does not attack him, because he was charmed by Tanjiro’s pure soul he saw in his subconscious.

Tanjiro finds Enmu who teases him and is happy Tanjiro is awake, as his blood will allow Enmu to challenge the Upper Rank demon and take his place. Tanjiro confronts Enmu, and, as he can easily resist the only spell demon uses (the sleeping spell broken by killing yourself in the sleep), defeats and beheads him. However, Enmu does not die and reveals that he fused his body with the train.

The train starts to turn into a demon body. Nezuko awakens Inosuke, when the demon train captures her. Zenitsu in his sleep attacks the train and saves Nezuko.

Kyōjurō instructs Inosuke and Tanjiro to look for Enmu’s head while he, Nezuko, and Zenitsu stay behind to protect the other passengers. Tanjiro and Inosuke find Enmu’s neckbone in the engine room, but the demon aggressively protects it by creating numerous eyes casting a sleeping spell.

Inosuke is not affected by the spell because of his boar mask. He destroys all the eyes when the train engineer tries to kill him. Tanjiro saves Inosuke by getting between him and the engineer. Tanjiro is stabbed, but alive.
Tanjiro finds a way to overcome the spell, severs the demon’s neck, thus stopping the train. Enmu dies whining about the demon slayers he couldn’t kill.

However, Akaza, the Upper Moon Three, appears soon after. He offers Kyōjurō to become a demon and attacks the demon slayer upon the refusal. Kyōjurō fights him alone and is fatally wounded, although Akaza is forced to flee when the sun begins rising. Tanjiro throws a sword through him and angrily calls the demon a coward for running away and declares Kyōjurō the winner of the fight.

Kyōjurō encourages Tanjiro and his friends. He sees his mother’s spirit and dies. The group cries.
