Console Wars delivers a sharp and surprisingly funny investigation into the corporate cultures that defined modern gaming. What could have been dry dissertations on professional grudges come alive thanks to an entertaining ensemble of interviewees, strategic plotting, and the whimsical spectacle of ’90s-era video game animations. Thoughtful exhibition and visual flare show Harris and Tulis have a clear love and deep respect for their subject. Yet, their doc displays a sophistication that allows for characters and the companies they represent to come off as less than saintly. This is no over-polished history of ’90s gaming, but one that reveals the era’s inventiveness and pettiness with equal relish. It’s a doc with byte, and that makes Console Wars a real winner.
